Virtual Workshop

Exploring private practice as a PhD

Wednesday, March 4th at 8-9pm EST

Today’s PhDs are looking for more. Many are finding that the workload, pressures, and lifestyle of traditional doctoral roles simply don’t align with the careers and lives they want to build. Others are wanting to add depth to their careers by seeing how research plays out in real life.

Luckily, there are alternatives.

You can use your degree differently.
You can build something of your own.
And you don’t have to figure it out alone.

This workshop is designed for people holding health-related PhDs — whether in nutrition (like me!), psychology, physical therapy or others — who are curious about transitioning into private practice but aren’t sure where to begin.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • The realities and opportunities of private practice

  • How your training already prepares you for this work (and what skills you may want to strengthen)

  • The first steps to take if you're considering going out on your own

You’ll leave with clarity, confidence, and a roadmap to help you decide whether private practice is right for you.

About the Speaker

Hi, I’m Dr. Megan Bragg. I’m a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with a PhD in Nutritional Biology, and I am a private practice owner and research consultant.

Towards the end of my postdoc, I began applying for jobs and was surprised by how few matched my needs.

Some were incompatible with my family’s life, requiring a long commute or relocation. Some were offering a salary that wouldn’t allow me to pay for childcare. Most of them sounded a bit boring (to me) and a few of them were directly opposite my own values.

I’d been feeling disconnected from my research work, wanting to make a more direct impact and help individuals 1-on-1.

So, in March 2025, I decided to open my own private practice providing evidence-based nutrition counseling for moms, kids, and families in my area.

It’s been a year of ups and downs, but I’ve created a business that works for me, my family, and my values. I feel inspired again, and I thrive on seeing the direct impact my work has on people’s health and happiness.

I’ve also made mistakes along the way that I’d love to help others avoid.

So, I decided to create this workshop to help others who are currently in the situation I was last year. If you’re exploring your options, in addition to or separately from your work in academia, industry, or government, this workshop is a place to get information, talk through your thought process, and decide on your next steps.

Seating is limited to the first 25 sign ups.

Your $20 registration reserves your spot.

After registration, a Google Teams Calendar invitation and link will be sent to the email you provide.

Why is there a fee?

I charge a modest fee to ensure that all participants in this small group are genuinely curious and committed to exploring private practice.
